Entertainment units or entertainment centers, as they are more frequently called, are the pieces of furniture that usually house a family's television set, cable box, satellite box, DVD player, music system, surround sound, VCR, stereo, gaming console and any other variety of amusement type device.

The collection entertainment console probably came from back when televisions were very large and bulky and were a form of furniture themselves! The cabinets they were housed in were usually made with faux wood to decorate the family's home. As televisions became compact, they did not need to be housed in a cabinet any more, but people still needed something to put their televisions on so they would be at eye level for ease of viewing.

These cabinets grew larger and larger until people began putting all their entertainment electronics on it, and thus the entertainment center was born. Now flat screens can be installed on walls, but since very few televisions can work alone, that is without cable or satellite, wall units and entertainment centers are usually bought in tandem.

The reason people still purchase entertainment centers is because even though they do not need something to place their TV on anymore, they still need something to put their cable boxes, satellite boxes, DVD players, stereo equipment and gaming consoles on. It is through this need that entertainment centers continue to be produced and bought. Convenience is the reason.

It is much more practical to put our equipment on a furniture piece than it is to put them someplace else, like on shelves, or on the floor. Chances are, you have one, your neighbor has one and your entire family has them. They are a facet of life, and they will not be going away anytime soon.
